Basic Rules of Handball

Handball is made of two teams of seven players and the goal is to score points by putting the ball into the opposing team's goal. The rules of the game are:

• After getting the ball, players have the option of passing, keeping, or shootings the ball.
• If the player is keeping the ball, they must dribble similar to basketball.
• The attacking or defending players are allowed to touch the floor of the goal area which is within six metres of the goal; the exception of course is the defending goalkeeper.
If a player is doing a shot or a pass in the goal area, it is only if it is done before touching the floor. Goalkeepers are allowed to leave the goal area, but are not allowed to leave the area with the ball in their hands.
• The ball cannot be passed back to the goalkeeper when they are in the goal area.

One of the more interesting scoring chances is when an attacking player jump into the goal area and catch a pass and then quickly shoot or pass the ball before touching the floor.
When a diving attacking player passes the ball to another diving teammate, it’s called Doubling.

A standard match has two 30-minute halves with a 10- to 15-minute break in the middle. At half-time, teams switch sides.
In a tournament or an occasion when a draw is not an option after the regular time, there are a maximum of two overtimes, each have two 5-minute periods with a one-minute break in between. If the overtime doesn’t determine the winning team, there will be a penalty shootout.
